In wake of Neill Blomkamp’s concept art of the Aliens film he doesn’t plan on pursuing, I have to say, it is a crime that he has put it aside. The concept art is beautiful and would’ve loved to see what he had in mind for the Aliens franchise. It seems that he intended to bring back Michael Biehn’s Dwayne Hicks possibly indicating that he had planned to retcon Alien3 and Alien Resurrection like I’ve been preaching for years. I mean, it’s very possible that Hicks was cloned, but how dumb would that be? Plus he has his scars from Aliens, can you really clone someone with scars?
I think it’s strong indication he planned to retcon 3 and 4. I feel this story would be great to pursue since Prometheus kinda tanked. I mean I liked Prometheus, but it diverted away from what it was conceived as, a prequel to Alien, they diverted away from it to start it’s own franchise and screwed it up. I’ve said it before, they could’ve wrapped up the questions of Alien and still could’ve done a whole franchise on the Engineers. It would be great if they just cancel Prometheus 2 for a retcon Alien 3.
I could even picture this story from the concept art, this is what I got from it:
After Aliens, Weyland-Yutani covered up the events of Hadley’s Hope like it never happened. Ripley, Hicks, and maybe Newt have become part of an anti-Weyland-Yutani group trying to gain evidence to prove the evil corruption of the corporation and the existence of the Xenomorphs. The group learns that after years of searching, the corporation had discovered the Derelict and moved it to Weyland-Yutani Headquarters.
Apparently with a large elevator. There, they have been experimenting with the Aliens creating new kinds.
So Ripley and Hicks mount an assault on the company to expose them and destroy the Aliens. Ripley even goes as far as to wear a bomb.
In order to escape, Ripley encounters a live Engineer who had been in hypersleep on the Derelict the whole time.
He agrees to help them escape and even gives Ripley a Space Jockey suit to fight the Aliens.
But the Engineer could have ulterior motives and could be using them. The goal of the story is to escape the building and make sure the Aliens don’t escape onto Earth. Could end happy with all the Aliens being killed as the building goes boom. Or it could end with a cliffhanger where one lone Alien escapes, but with a baby Queen wrapped around his arm. Perfect ending.
That’s what I got from the concept art, I could be dead wrong but it’s fun to guess.
Point is, I’m just glad that someone like Neil Blomkamp wanted to retcon Alien3 and Alien Resurrection as well, which is something I’ve always wanted. But he never pitched it to Fox, and even he did I’m sure they’d put the kibosh on it. If only.
