Lately I’ve been contemplating on how Terminator Salvation could’ve been improved. I mean, the story was conceived on the idea of protecting Kyle Reese in the future instead of protecting Sarah or John Connor in the past. But then it tried to be like Total Recall, about a spy who didn’t know he was a spy to bring down the Resistance.
One idea I had thought of was that, maybe Marcus could’ve have been advanced Terminator sent by John to find Kyle Reese, because Reese wouldn’t trust a Terminator, and Connor made him more humans to help find Kyle Reese. I said that before. But I was kinda wondering about another idea.
I had thought of this idea from a Batman cartoon and a Justice League (animated series) comic book, where an infiltrator: one a robot one a shapeshifting alien had been programmed so well at impersonating this person that they bought their own cover. In the Batman cartoon, it was a robot who was built to bring the end of the human race, like Skynet, but he was built so much like Batman that he thought he was Batman. And in the Justice League comic book, a shapeshifting alien had impersonated Martian Manhunter that he thought he was the Martian.
So I had thought of this idea for a Terminator, who was programmed to infiltrate the Resistance, but he did so well, that he thought he was human and just can’t grasp the concept that he’s not human. Like he’s under the impression that his mind was put in a robot’s body, even though there are inconsistencies in his memory, like his first kiss, his favorite song, or his last good meal. I mean, that must be really messed up. It’s like a Total Recall meets Blade Runner. It’s just a great concept. When he realizes why he was created, he has a chance to pull the trigger, but doesn’t because again, he’s been built so well to pass for a good man, he became one.
I mean, again, I like the concept that Salvation was conceived around the idea of protecting Kyle Reese. But I also like the idea that Marcus was a spy who didn’t know he was a spy in order to kill John Connor. But I don’t think you can do both, also how do you do it without it sounding convoluted. That’s what happened with Salvation. Again, how could Salvation could’ve been fixed? Again, how could it be made more like Total Recall, because Total Recall’s plan of a spy who didn’t know he was a spy was thought out. At least from my point of view. I mean, better thought out than Salvation, again, why Skynet didn’t just kill Kyle Reese just doesn’t work.
